S is for September Sounds!
Surgeon – Whose Bad Hands Are These (Monolake Remix)
I soundtrack my daydreams, and I find most music extremely visual– it’s why I prefer songs without lyrics. This is cold pistons pumping, frozen blood over asphalt, helicopters, night and snow. Like a bunch of Terminators skanking in a meat-locker.
This is actually a mix of a couple of different Basic Channel songs (Cyrus’s “Enforcement,” with a bit of Phylyps “Phylyps Trak” and “Phylyps Rmx”). Since Basic Channel are fucking awesome, there’s no reason for this track not to be.
This is early stuff, and there’s a definite boombap-boombap hardcore drum influence, which flips a switch somewhere between my ears. The absence of drawn-out Metal wankery helps, too.
Stiff Little Fingers – Suspect Device
Jake Burns is a great jolly fat man now, which confuses me MUCHLY.
Shackleton – Blood On My Hands
There’s been a lot of talk about hypothetical wars in the past six years; metaphors slung in lyrics or alluded to in interviews, but Shackleton inserts bizarre vocals about leaving a corpse behind him, then samples the WTC falling. All that, and it’ll shake your house down if your stereo is ‘ard enough. Plenty fucked.
From Sister, this is the most S of these stupendous september selections. Taught me the word “hylozoic.” I dig the distorted riffs that kick in around 2:54, cause they’re Surf Style.
The Specials – Stupid Marriage
“Weyyou mean, ‘oi oi oi?’ Mi say COURT IN SESSION!“
Substance & Vainqueur – Immersion
Substance & Vainqueur are, coincidentally, also Scion. If getting to school for me involved swimming through a frozen concrete tunnel at the bottom of the arctic ocean, then this’d be my most played song. Assuming I had a waterproof iPod, anyway.
